Over the years I have used a few apps that gave rewards for walking/running. The first one that I used was Bounts. I received 2x £5 gift cards from them before they realised that their business was not sustainable. 

Next I downloaded the Lucozade app. With Lucozade I received six bottles of energy drink +2 plastic water bottles before the app stopped working. Next I downloaded the Strava app. With Strava you enter challenges, for example, running 20 miles in 20 days. If you complete the challenge you are entered into a prize draw. In two years I did not receive any prizes. I therefore decided that if I was going to give them information and receive nothing in return then I will delete the app. I have now decided to try the SweatCoin app.

What is SweatCoin? 

SweatCoin’s moto is “It pays to walk”. They want healthier people living on a healthier planet. 

SweatCoin is an app that measures how many steps you take and then converts the steps into virtual coins which can be used to buy real rewards in the Offers Marketplace. Offers can expire or go out of stock so if you have a large number coins look to see whats on offer then decide to buy one. You could decide to wait for a better reward. As of today (2 March 2020) 20,000 coins can get you a £1,000 holiday in the south of France, a 75” 4K Samsung TV, or a Curved Samsung TV although I suspect that the prizes will have changed when you eventually get 20,000 coins. 17/6/22 update - I was right - the big prizes have disappeared. 

SweatCoin will not make you rich but it can save you some money. It is free to use. Offers in the marketplace are given by companies to market their products and services. SweatCoin say that they do not sell your data. 

The app can be run in the background which, SweatCoin claims, uses very little battery and bandwidth. 

How SweatCoin works

Every 1,000 steps earns 1 SweatCoin (but SweatCoin take back 0.05 coin in commission for converting it). It uses GPS so it is not so accurate inside the house. It can tell, however, if you are just sitting in your chair swinging your arm holding your phone. The maximum number of coins that you can earn in one day is determined by the level of membership that you have. The entry level of membership is free but don’t worry, upper levels only cost you virtual coins not real cash. 20/12/22 update - this has now changed there is only the free and paid membership. 

  1. The entry level of membership is called Mover. It is free and allows you to earn up to 1 SweatCoin per day

  2. If you are prepared to pay 1 SweatCoin every month you will be moved up to Shaker membership. This will allow you to earn up to 3 SweatCoins per day. Paying 1 SweatCoin every month, therefore, will allow you to earn an extra 2 SweatCoins per day or approximately an extra 60 SweatCoin per month. 

  3. Quaker membership costs 6 SweatCoins every month. This will allow you to earn up to 5 SweatCoins per day. Paying a further 5 SweatCoins every month, therefore, will allow you to earn up to an extra 2 SweatCoins per day or approximately an extra 60 SweatCoins per month. 

  4. The current top level of membership is the Breaker membership. For 12 SweatCoins every month you can earn up to 20 SweatCoins per day. Paying a further 6 SweatCoins every month, therefore, will allow you to earn up to an extra 15 SweatCoins per day or approximately an extra 450 SweatCoins per month. 

  5. The Trouble Maker membership is reported to be coming soon. 

The Government recommended number of steps per day is 10,000 per day. Quaker membership only pays SweatCoins for the first 5,000 or so steps so the Breaker Membership is the minimum level of membership we should be aiming for. To receive the maximum quantity of SweatCoins on Breaker level membership, however would require over 21,000 steps. At walking pace, a step is about three feet so it will equate to about 12 miles. At running pace it will equate to nearer 15 miles. These distance will be out of reach for most people. If you can run 15 miles everyday it would take 1,000 days, or about 3 years to get the top offering of the holiday, televisions, etc. 

I hope that has not put you off. The idea of the app is to get everyone moving more. 

SweatCoins offerings should be a bonus for what you should be doing anyway, not the purpose of what you are doing.

Registering for SweatCoin

Before I downloaded that app, I looked at what other people were saying above SweatCoin. These were, in the main, good. There were a few negative comments. 

  1. Most negative comments related to steps being taken and registered but not being converted to SweatCoins. This can be explained by the different levels of membership. For details see the section above about membership levels. Basically the lower the level of membership, the lower the number of coins per day you can receive. 

  2. Another person complained that they had been asked for debit/card details and had lost £300. SweatCoin do not ask for card details. I can not see why they would need to as they do not give real coins so they would not need bank details. I do not know if this was somebody being mischievous and wrote something that is not true or if they had registered with a fake website. Either way it is not SweatCoin’s fault. As an update. Since using SweatCoin, I have found out that some of the offers that can be purchased using the coins give a reduction in price for products and some are free for the first month. In these cases, card details are given to the other company not to SweatCoin. 

  3. Another person complained that his steps were lower than his Partners. This may be a problem with SweatCoin but my experience with Strava gives another explanation. When I used the Strava app I initially used an iPod. When I changed to using an iPhone the distances suddenly became less. I therefore went for a run with both and again the iPod showed a significantly longer distance. When I looked at the maps produced by Strava, the line of the run on the iPhone followed the road quite accurately but on the iPod it zigzagged. The GPS on the iPhone is much more accurate than the GPS on the iPod. This could have been the reason for the issue with the two people. 

I could not see any real problems with what people said so I downloaded the app. I was welcomed to SweatCoin and was asked my name. I only gave my first name and this was accepted. The app uses the number of steps that my phone detects so I gave the app permission to access it. I also gave permission to GPS while using the app. My phone number was required and I quickly received a verification code that I entered into the app. The only other thing that was required was my my email address. I received 0.95 coins (the equivalent of 1,000 steps) as a welcome gift and was asked if I was willing to receive notifications. I was then told to start walking to grow my balance.

My first day of SweatCoins

After downloading the app and registering for SweatCoin I decided to make a cup of coffee. I then looked around the app. I had walked 37 steps. So the app does record steps inside. 

I looked to see what I could get from SweatCoin. The Specials that were available were: 

  1. Three months of TIDAL HiFi for FREE. Oh it’s sold out. When it was free it was free for three months then it costs £9.99. If I was interested if a music streaming service I would go for one that I had heard of i.e. either Spotify or Amazon Music. 

  2. 50% off a Scrub from Coffee Scrub Co. Cost – 0.49 coins. There is also a £2.99 shipping charge. 

  3. Free Artificial Intelligence Personal Trainer. Cost – 13.99 coins. You get one month free if you pay 13.99 coins. Doesn’t sound free to me. I’ll give this one a miss even when I have 13.99 coins. 

  4. For 150 coins I can become a SweatCoin Influencer. Then if I can get 30 people to join SweatCoin I will be paid $20 into my PayPal account. This sounds good if I can get 150 coins and 30 people to join. I wonder how much $20 will be worth in £ at that time. 

  5. Daily bonus. Watch an advertisement and get up to 25 coins. I watched an advert (Toon Blast – looks mind numbing) and received 0.50 coins. So not the top prize. As an update. Up to 3 daily bonuses are available each day. The first is available immediately, the second after 1,000 steps, and the third after 2,000. I only realised this on the second day when I went to the daily bonus section after I had walked over 2,000 steps. On the second day I received 10 coins, 1 coin, and 0.5 coins. 

  6. As I said above, 20,000 coins gets really good prizes but will take a long time to get that many coins. 

  7. As a special, I could also give my coins to charities. 

I gave Strava 2 years. I will give SweatCoin a few years to see if anything decent comes up in the Offers. After all it is free and I will only be doing what I would have been doing anyway. 

Everyone starts off as a Mover Member and can earn up to 1 coin per day. I quickly reached the 1,000 steps and earned my one coin. I was asked if I wanted to become a Shaker and earn up to 3 coins per day. Although it costs 1 coin per month, I was offered Shaker Membership free for 30 days. I am currently returning to training after an operation so I am going for a short slow runs each morning and a walk each afternoon. After my first run I had earned the 3 coins and was offered Quaker Membership free for 30 days. After the walk I had earned the 5 coins and was offered Breaker Membership free for 30 days. 

When I have recovered from the operation I hope to be running In excess of 10,000 steps 4 or 5 times a week. This, together with normal walking activities such as going to the shops, I recon I will earn over 200 coins per month. This is well short of the maximum of 450 coins for Breaker Membership but over 3 times the maximum Quaker Membership. After the free 30 days I will continue with the 12 coins a month Breaker Membership. 

At the end of the first day, I had taken 11,058 steps of which 7,643 were approved. I guess that the step indoors were counted but not approved. The 7,643 steps were converted to 7.26 coins. I also had 0.95 coins as a welcome gift and 0.5 coins as a daily bonus. A grand total of 8.71 coins. Not bad for not doing anything more than I would have done. 

At the end of the first week, I had 103 SweatCoins. I received 51 SweatCoins through steps and 52 SweatCoins through daily bonuses. As long as you can walk 2,000 steps you will have 3 bonuses. Each time you have to sit through an advert lasting about 30 seconds before being told how many coins you are being given. The minimum is 0.5 coins, the maximum is 25 coins. In the first week I received a 25 coin bonus, a 10 bonus, and a lot of 1 and 0.5 bonuses. 

It has now been three weeks since I started using SweatCoin and I have just broken the 500 SweatCoin barrier. I have been able to increase the number of steps that I take each day, I have been fortunate to receive some higher SweatCoin amounts in the daily bonus given for watching adverts, and SweatCoin have introduced a 5 SweatCoin bonus for undertaking any form of activity for 20 minutes.
