My wife had heard the story of Slapton Sands and wanted to see where it happened. It was also a convenient place for a drink stop. The story of the secret dead is an interesting story but for forty years, the deaths of 946 American soldiers and sailors was kept secret.  Half way between Strete and the village of Torcross is a monument presented, in 1954, by the US Army thanking the people of the towns of Blackawton, Chillington, East Allington, Sherford, Slapton, Stokenham, Strete, and Torcross.  In 1943, the inhabitants of these towns left their homes so that the US could practice for the D-Day landings.  On the monument there is...
