Encourage your children to join the Silly Squad
Reading books has long been known as a way of increasing understanding and vocabulary. It also is expands imagination and encourages creativity leading to better mental health. Unfortunately children read less during the summer months because of distractions like playing out all day. Reading, especially away from school, should be fun. Children will read more if they are enjoying what they are reading. That is what the Summer Reading Challenge is all about.
This year, because of school closures and isolation due to Covid19, it is starting early. So put Monday1 June in your diaries and encourage your children to join the Summer Reading Challenge https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/
The website includes suggested books but children are encouraged to read anything that they will really enjoy. It doesn’t matter what it is. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a book of jokes, even a comic.
The Summer Reading Challenge is normally run through libraries, but because libraries are currently closed, this year it will be run through a dedicated website. Children taking part in the Challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in to all different kinds of funny books. The Challenge will run from June to September. Activities start on Monday 1 June with the official launch of the Silly Squad on 5 June.
The Silly Squad website will include book suggestions but will also include games, quizzes, and plenty of downloadable activities. And it will all be Free.
