Some ideas for keeping your mind active during Covid19

It is always important to keep our minds and bodies active but during the Covid19 outbreak it has become more difficult, particularly if you are shielding. Keeping moving physically and keeping your mind active are essential for your health and wellbeing. Here are some of my ideas for keeping mentally active.

Reading

The boy the mole the fox and the horse
Reading books has long been known as a way of increasing understanding and vocabulary. It is now believed to be more relaxing than watching TV, listening to music, and even drinking a cup of tea. A study by Yale University School of Public Health concluded that adults who read for three and a half hours per week can live longer than those who don’t read books.

It is believed that reading increases brain activity lowers the risk of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s which can reduce life expectancy. Follow this link for the Amazon best selling books https://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Sellers-Books. Or this link for the best selling Kindle books https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kindle/Best-Sellers. You do not have to have a Kindle to read Kindle books. Just download the free app from the AppStore or from Google.

Many Kindle books are free with Kindle Unlimited. My review of Kindle Unlimited can be found at: https://arthurd.art.blog/what-is-kindle-unlimited/. My review contains a link to get Kindle Unlimited free for 30 days.

Colouring books

Colouring Book
Colouring books were once seen as only a children’s activity but they are now
acknowledged as being of benefit to adults as well. Children are encouraged to keep between the lines to improve motor skills. Using motor skills stimulates one side of the brain while choosing colours stimulates creative cells in the other so it is good for adults as well.

Keeping between the lines also improves concentration but does not increase stress. It can actually reduce stress and help improve sleep. Being an expert artist is not a necessary requirement. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=colouring+books+for+adults

Making something can be very therapeutic

Start a craft that you haven’t done for a while or learn a new skill. Doctors and nurses have to wear face masks for 12 hours or more. Masks put pressure behind the ears and become uncomfortable. How about making ear protectors and sending them to a hospital. You benefit and medical staff benefit. You can try sewing https://www.thecraftpatchblog.com/easy-diy-ear-savers/ or crocheting https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=making+ear+protectors

Download a free puzzle or game

If it is a game, make sure that it is not a mind numbing game but something that challenges. Among my favourites are Sudoku and 2048. I have tried online jigsaws but it’s not as satisfying as putting a real piece in the puzzle. So get the old jigsaws out of the loft or buy a new one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=jigsaw+puzzles+for+adults

Open University

If you want something a bit more challenging why not try a free course from the Open University https://www.open.edu/openlearn/. How about giving another go to things you couldn’t understand at school, maybe maths or science. Learn a foreign language and impress people when we are finally allowed to go abroad on holiday again.

Whatever way you decide to keep your mind active, remember to keep your body active as well. I have found SweatCoin very helpful in keeping me moving and financially beneficial as well. My review of SweatCoin can be found at https://arthurd.art.blog/sweatcoin/. It pays to walk.
