For a great day out visit Stonehenge and Woodhenge
Stonehenge is one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments. Everyone should visit it at least once. I have visited twice in the last two years. Photographs do not do it justice. You have to be there to appreciate the scale and the beauty of the stone and the setting.
How was it built? Nobody knows. 5,000 years ago, how could people move such large stones over such a distance. Why was it built? Nobody knows. It is known that the sun always rises over the Heel Stone on the 21st of June (the longest day of the year), and always sets over the Heel Stone on the shortest day of the year (21st of December). Some people therefore believe it may have been used as a calendar and used in the study of the movement of the stars. When you visit Stonehenge you won’t get all the answers but you’ll have a great day out.
Stonehenge is more than the stone blocks. You can also visit replicas of five neolithic houses furnished with replica axes, pottery and other artefacts from the time. See how people lived over 4,500 years ago. Also on site is the Stonehenge Exhibition Centre that contains over 250 archaeological treasures, hands on exhibits, and the reconstructed face of a 5,000 year old man.
While you’re there don’t forget to visit the nearby, lesser known, Woodhenge. Woodhenge was probably built about 4,300 years ago. It is believed to be the remains of a large burial mounds. You should also not miss the once thriving town of Old Sarum with its Iron Age hill fort. Also nearby is the Netheravon Dovecote, an early 18th century dovecote with 700 chalk nesting boxes.
Admission to Stonehenge costs £19 for adults and £11.40 for children but entry is free for English Heritage members. Click here for English heritage membership.
