Echo Dot Smart Speaker Review

Echo Dot 2
I bought an Echo Dot Smart Speaker (2nd generation) on Black Friday 2018. I loved it.

When British Gas installed it’s Hive system in my home I received another, this time FREE, Echo Dot.

The Echo Dot connects to Alexa (Amazon’s cloud-based voice service). It can play music, make calls, set alarms and timers, ask questions, check your calendar, weather, traffic and sports scores, manage to-do and shopping lists, control compatible smart home devices, and more. It is a great device. Why type into Google when you can just ask Alexa. Through the Dot, Alexa can control compatible smart lights, switches, TVs, thermostats and more.

When you ask the Echo Dot for a song, artist or genre of music, it can get it from from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, TuneIn and more, whichever you subscribe to. With multi-room music, you can play music on Echo devices in different rooms. Echo can also play audiobooks, radio stations, give news briefings and more.

The Dot is designed to protect your privacy: built with multiple layers of privacy protection and control, including a Microphone Off button that electronically disconnects the microphones.

The Echo Dot is Amazon’s best seller in the Echo range of products. Partly because it is much cheaper than its big brother (the Echo Studio) but partly because Amazon often drop the price in sales such as Black Fridays, New Year, Amazon Prime days etc. Don’t let the cheap price fool you. It is a fantastic device. It can do everything it’s big brother can do. Some people say that the sound quality of the Dot is not as good as its big brother. I think that the sound quality is good but if you would prefer to play you music through a super duper sound system then a 3.5mm audio jack is built in or you can bluetooth it to the sound system

So why is it so cheap. If you buy this then you are more likely to buy other products that can be controlled by Alexa. Its so cheap because Amazon know that they can get your money in other ways.

Echo Dot 5
The Echo Dot is now on to its 5th generation. Its Recommended Retail Price is £54.99. From time to time, well it seems like a lot of the time, Amazon reduces the price.
