The Lugger Inn in Polruan in Cornwall The next stage of our Devon and Cornwall holiday takes us to the Lugger Inn in Polruan for a two night stay. The Lugger Inn was first opened as a public house in 1794 but the rooms above have recently been refurbished to a very high standard. There are four rooms and we stayed in room number 3 overlooking Polruan harbour. The bed was very comfortable.  The room was very clean but there is no room service.  If you want the towels changed you have to ask the staff in the bar. The shower was hot and powerful. The description of Lugger Inn states that there is no parking but we were fortunate to find somebody leaving one of the very few spaces on the Quay.  The charge is £8.50 for the whole day.  Al...

Further details of adverts and affiliate links can be found here . The Secret Dead of Slapton Sands On our way from Torquay to Fowey we decided to break the journey at Slapton Sands. My wife had heard the story of Slapton Sands and wanted to see where it happened. It was also a convenient place for a drink stop. The story of the secret dead is an interesting story but for forty years, the deaths of 946 American soldiers and sailors was kept secret.  Half way between Strete and the village of Torcross is a monument presented, in 1954, by the US Army thanking the people of the towns of Blackawton, Chillington, East Allington, Sherford, Slapton, Stokenham, Strete, and Torcross.  In 1943, the inhabitants of these towns left their homes so that the US could practice for the D-Day landings.  On the monument there is...

Further details of adverts and affiliate links can be found  here .  Day Out from Torquay On our return trip to Cornwall we decided to reminisce with a return trip to Paignton but, because of our love of Fawlty Towers, decided to stay in Torquay and visit the adjacent resort of Paignton.  We had a great day in Paignton and decided to return the following day to take a trip on the steam train. The day started off great and then got better.  We boarded an open top bus from Torquay to Paignton and I discovered that my pensioner bus pass also go me free travel on an open top bus 200 miles from home.  My wife is not a pensioner so she had to pay the £2 maximum fare - still a bargain. Further details of adverts and affiliate links can be found  here . We really enjoyed our visit to Cornwall last year so we decided to return this year via Devon.  My wife had been to Paignton on holiday a few times and I had been there once but that was over 40 year’s ago. Neither of us had been to Torquay, but we decided to start our holiday in Torquay mainly because of our love of Fawlty Towers. After we booked we found out that, although Fawlty Towers is set in Torquay, it was actually filmed at Wooburn Grange Country Club in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire.  It caught fire in 1991 and has since been demolished. W e booked into the Imperial Hotel in Torquay for three nights. Although not very impressive on the outside, the interior of the Imperial Hotel still contains the grandeur of a bygone age. T...
